The rough is sourced from Tanzania (Africa).Its having the hardness of 6.5-7. Tanzanite is in blue form of gem zoisite family. This is a very interesting and important department; the work of this department is to check the rough stone and to determine its properties such as color, size, clarity and cut.

Planning & Marking

This is one of the most important phases of the entire manufacturing process. It is also known as the heart department of the entire process. This is because in this department the person has to decide as to which shape the tanzanite is going to be cut and its weight will be coming. Here the person doing the planning, after he plans as to what is going to be the final product, he has to mark the tanzanite rough from where the rough is to be Cut.

Making and Pre-form

Making & Pre-form is a simple process by which a tanzanite rough can be divided into desired marked pieces. In this the marking is perpendicular or against the planes that the tanzanite rough needs to be sawn i.e. 'cut.' In this process the rough is being cut as per marking as in perform shapes .One side of the stone is cut with a flat surface - this will eventually become the table or main flat facet on top of the stone. In the beginning, this main flat facet is used to orient the rest of the stone. At this stage the stone is called a pre-form, and you can see what the final shape will be.

Once the process of Perform is completed the tanzanite stone is sent back to the planning and marking department for checking the results of procedures and then passed on to the next process of Bruting.

Bruting :

During this stage of the process, the Tanzanite’s girdle is formed. This is also known as girdling or rounding. The girdle is the surface which is formed around the thickest part of the stone. To form the girdle, the stone is again set in a 'dop' which is in turn fixed on to the centre of a lathe which spins at high speed. Using another tanzanite stone set in a long 'bruting stick', the corners of the rough stone are gradually rounded off until the spinning tanzanite is perfectly round at its thickest part. After this process, once again the quality check is being done and if the piece is fine its being passed to the polish department for last process.


After being preformed the tanzanite is being passed to the polishing department where the final work of faceting is done. Polishing means the process of giving the tanzanite its final look. Here the artisan has to be very careful at all stages as even a small mistake done by him can make the tanzanite look poorer than what it might have looked had it been cut properly. This step make the tanzanite into a Faceted pieces This is the last step in the manufacturing process of the tanzanite from where on it goes to the grading department.
